What Does Gauge Mean in Metal?

In metalworking, gauge (or gage) is a standard unit of measure that indicates the thickness of a metal sheet. Unlike standard units, the gauge number is inversely proportional to the actual thickness; as the gauge number increases, the metal thickness decreases. This system is primarily used for ferrous metals and wire products to simplify manufacturing specifications.

Common Sheet Metal Gauge Standards

Manufacturers’ Standard Gage – for standard steel, galvanized steel, and stainless steel

The American Wire Gage (AWG) or Brown and Sharpe Gage – for non-ferrous metals, such as aluminum and brass.

Birmingham Gage (BG) – for a variety of metals

Standard Gauge for Zinc

The following charts shows the various gauge sizes of the common engineering materials, and their measurements in metric and imperial.

What is a Gauge Number?

A gauge number is a standardized measurement used to define the thickness of sheet metal or the diameter of wire. In this system, the numerical value is inversely related to the physical thickness; a higher gauge number indicates a thinner material, while a lower gauge number indicates a thicker material.
